I wanted my first post to be really personal, to give you an idea of who I am and what I’m about.
So how about my sister’s wedding for starters! It’s taken her 40+ years and a couple of failed attempts (thank goodness, as my new brother-in-law is the cats whiskers, so I’m glad she didn’t get snagged by anyone else first!)
The wedding took place in Kelowna, British Columbia (like me, my sister’s lived in other parts of the world and in fact met her new hubby whilst living in The Caymans). A Canadian native, it didn’t take him long to persuade her to move to that part of the world – she’s even got into some serious outdoor pursuit stuff – no more sitting on the sofa with a glass of wine and a few crisps of an evening!
My Mum and I flew out for the big day in September and my cousin (now working and living in The States) gave my sister away. It was a special day (no really, not in a “cutesy, Hallmark” way, but really). Our new Canadian friends and in-laws are lovely – and my sister will be well taken care of in her new home town.
Family is important – it’s who you are, where you come from. Yeah, I know, some folks don’t get along but when we can focus on the commonalities rather than the differences you’ll be surprised what can happen.
I’ve not always got along with my sister – in fact in our teens we fought quite a bit. As adults we’ve had our differences (who doesn’t) but when I started to appreciate her for who she is (not just my sister) but a smart, kind, loving, woman who I can roll around on the floor giggling with – that’s when I really “got” how important she is in my life…
