I’ve been running a business from home since 2003 – yes, in different guises, but the location has been the same. Granted I’ve moved three times, but it’s still been the place where I also eat, sleep and hang out.
Sometimes the same four walls get old – inspiration can be gained by moving from my desk (a side table designed for a hall, but perfectly fitting for my minimalist MacBook Pro and telephone) to the couch, but that’s all the choice I really have.
Towards the end of last year I heard about Central Working, an “in beta” co-working space to be launched in Spring 2011 in London’s Bloomsbury. I joined the Facebook Page, checked out the forthcoming “We Show, You Tell” nights – the ethos behind Central is that if you want to use the space you become a member and have a say in how things work. Nice, real collaboration!
Meeting founders, James Layfield and Steve Pette I was immediately impressed by their open attitude and real desire to make a space that “just works” for members. Passionate about creating something very different from the slightly shabby co-working spaces or cold rent-a-desk offices currently available, they have made Central a lovely place to be (as you can see from the photos I took on my first day as a member a week ago).
Not only are there a range of areas and different seating to suit all takers, but three fabulous meeting rooms for hire (they are seriously cheap for Central London – shhhhhh!), and a cafe selling tasty home made cakes, savoury snack, and fantastic tea and coffee (hand picked from the best small suppliers). Even better, your order is taken and delivered to your desk…
Entrepreneurial is the theme running throughout Central – from the founders, to members, to suppliers – thinking outside the box is the norm. Everyone is encouraged to “talk about” the product/service that is their business and let members know “what they are looking for” – so it becomes a truly collaborative place to be. I plan to work from Central a couple of times a month, why not join me for a cuppa and check it out?
